Jim Shannon and Mike Hyatt are back at Mike's farm for episode 142 of The Bourbon Road, settling in with a flight of five Woodford Reserve expressions from the Master's Collection — plus the brand's barrel-strength Batch Proof. After a taste of a craft distillery cast-strength pour to warm up, the boys work their way through some of the most experimental and collectible bottles Woodford Reserve has ever released, touching on oat grain mash bills, select American oak aging, ultra-aged rare bourbon, chocolate malted rye, and finally a full-throttle batch proof release. With a trip to Cancun on the horizon and road visits to Evan Williams, Peerless, and Log Still Distillery in the pipeline, the guys are clearly ready to shake off the last of winter and COVID alike.

On the Tasting Mat:

  • Woodford Reserve Master's Collection Series 13 – Oat Grain Bourbon: 90.4 proof. Mash bill of 66% corn, 18% oats, 12% malt, 4% rye. A highly unconventional mashbill that swaps most of the rye for oats, producing a nose reminiscent of an Irish whiskey — malty, slightly funky, with hints of apple-cinnamon oatmeal. The palate is soft and somewhat hollow in the middle, with a faint flat cola note and a lightly bitter finish. Retails around $134.99. (00:05:58)
  • Woodford Reserve Master's Collection Series 14 – Select American Oak: 90.4 proof. Standard Woodford mash bill, aged approximately nine years in select Ozark-sourced American oak barrels. The nose opens with classic brown sugar, vanilla, caramel, and dark stone fruits. The palate delivers baking spice, dark bitter chocolate, and a drying oak finish consistent with extended barrel aging. A more traditional Woodford profile amplified by time and wood quality. Retails around $134.99. (00:14:04)
  • Woodford Reserve Master's Collection Series 16 – Very Fine Rare Bourbon: 90.4 proof. Mash bill of 72% corn, 18% rye, 10% malted barley. Includes barrels at least 17 years old. A celebration release marking the new bottle format and a new chapter for the Master's Collection. The nose carries rich leather, dark stone fruit, baking chocolate, and warm spice. The palate is dry and oaky with long-aged complexity, a leathery mid-palate, and a finish that trails off with bitter cocoa and spice. Retails around $132–$189. (00:22:19)
  • Woodford Reserve Master's Collection Series 15 – Chocolate Malted Rye: 90.4 proof. Mash bill of 70% corn, 15% chocolate malted rye, 15% distiller's malt. The rye in this expression is toasted to a deep chocolate level before fermentation, producing a legally compliant Kentucky straight bourbon that smells and tastes unmistakably of Tootsie Rolls and cocoa. The palate is smooth and unhurried, with a gentle movement across the palate, chocolatey sweetness, and no added flavoring of any kind. A genuinely surprising and boundary-pushing expression. Retails around $130. (00:33:49)
  • Woodford Reserve Batch Proof (2020 Release): 123.6 proof. Mash bill of 72% corn, 18% rye, 10% malted barley. Released February 2020. The nose bursts with baking spices, ginger snap cookies, brown sugar, sorghum molasses, and dark cherry. On the palate it is thick and viscous with caramel, chocolate, cinnamon, and a long, balanced finish devoid of harshness. A bold, layered expression that showcases Woodford's standard mashbill at full barrel strength. (00:41:52)

Whether you're building a Woodford Master's Collection shelf display or hunting down bottles on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, this episode gives you an honest, glass-in-hand walkthrough of some of the most ambitious releases from one of Kentucky's most iconic distilleries. Jim and Mike close things out with upcoming episode previews featuring Bernie Lubbers at the Evan Williams Experience and visits to Peerless and Log Still Distillery — the Bourbon Road is very much back in motion.
