316. Filmland Spirits Moonlight Mahem Extended Cut Review
It's Halloween and a full moon — Jim & Mike crack open Filmland Spirits Moonlight Mayhem Extended Cut at 115 proof to celebrate.
Tasting Notes
Show Notes
Halloween falls on a full moon this year, and Jim and Mike are marking the occasion with a bottle as spooky as the night itself. The guys kick things off paying tribute to the werewolf legends of Eastern Europe, trading favorite monster movies from Silver Bullet to Underworld before settling in to taste one of the most eye-catching bottles on any shelf right now.
On the Tasting Mat:
- Filmland Spirits Moonlight Mayhem Extended Cut: A cast-strength bourbon from the veteran-owned Filmland Spirits out of Los Angeles, California. Bottled at 115 proof from an MGP mash bill of 75% corn, 21% rye, and 4% malted barley, aged approximately four to five years, and priced at $79.99. The nose opens with deep oak, caramel, earthy notes reminiscent of cremini mushroom, vanilla, and hints of dark dried fruit. On the palate it is viscous and back-loaded, with sugary sweetness rolling across the tongue, buttery Werther's candy character, a touch of vanilla, and a peppery spice. The finish delivers a solid Kentucky hug of medium length. The full-wrap label, designed as a vintage movie poster complete with a werewolf motif, is as much a conversation piece as the whiskey inside. (00:04:51)
Jim and Mike raise a glass to Filmland Spirits for their transparency on the label, their veteran roots, and their aggressive national expansion. Whether you are posted up on the front porch handing out candy or huddled around a fire on a chilly October night, this full-moon-proof bourbon is built for the occasion. Find Filmland Spirits in Kentucky, California, and online in more than forty states, and connect with Jim and Mike in the Bourbon Roadies Facebook group or at thebourbonroad.com.

Welcome to another trip down the Bourbon Road with your hosts Jim and Mike. So grab a glass of your favorite bourbon and kick back.
Well, you know who likes to give back to their community is one of our sponsors, Jim. Chris Cruz from Cruz Customs Flags. He does custom flags out of bourbon barrels. Not only does that, he do that, but he's also using veterans to build those flags with. I've got one right behind me, Jim. I know you got one on your bar. Beautifully handcrafted, repurposing a bourbon barrel, not throwing it away, not making it into smoking chips, making a piece of Americana, right?
Something that'll last probably quite a few years longer than a bourbon barrel would, right?
Not only that, but he's using veterans to build those pieces of art with. You know, you gotta love that. But he's also giving back to his community at all times, helping veterans out like ourselves. He is really in tune to that. Go check his site out, cruisecustomsflags.com. You can buy his flags on there, key holders. Heck, Jim's got some of these neat little cups that are charred inside made out of oak that you can put a cocktail in.
They call those the whiskey grail, don't they?
Yeah, that is, it kind of reminds you, you know, when you think of a grail, but truly a whiskey grail right there. Go check those out at Cruise Customs Flags. Purchased from this guy, veteran owned, veteran operated, making a veteran built product.
Hello everybody, I'm Jim Shannon. And I'm Mike Hyatt. And this is The Bourbon Road. And today, Mike, it's the day before. Well, actually we're releasing this on Halloween, right? Yeah, so we're talking to everybody today, it's Halloween. Yeah, it's Halloween. It's a full moon, right? That's right. And we've got an appropriate bottle on tonight. We do have an amazing bottle on. We were talking about werewolves a little while ago. Yeah. Because, you know, that's a, that's an appropriate topic for Halloween. Uh, and the werewolf has been around for many, many years, the movies anyway.
Well, I think the lore of a werewolf, you know, you know, half man, half beast that's been around forever. Yeah. Um, humans thinking, Hey, um, There's wild animal out there that's going to get me. Yeah. So that werewolf comes to mind, right? It does. Maybe Romania.
It's always those Eastern European countries, but not only with the werewolf, but also with the vampires of Dracula, right? It's like Romania.
Yeah. The countries that scare the bejesus out of you, right?
Yeah. Like Ukraine, right? I guess Ukraine would be kind of that area, that Eastern European, right before you get to Russia. Yeah.
Yeah. Even that, you know, that Western Russia area, you know, you think of those countries and stuff and, They they did some bad stuff back in the day to each other like putting each other on spikes and stuff.
Yeah You know, I was thinking back to the werewolf movies and there's been an awful lot of them actually has been a lot of them recently But if you go way, way, way, way back, I mean back to when our parents were going to the movies as kids, you know, you remember Lon Chaney Jr.? No, who's that? He's the guy that did the original werewolf movie. I think it was called The Wolf Man. The Wolf Man. Yeah, it was The Wolf Man from back in the 1940s.
And you can still catch that on TV or now and then I think it's been a number of years since I've seen it Yeah, I can I think I'm trying to think like the first movie that I saw was silver bullet That was I think that was like the first werewolf movie I can remember and then obviously Teen Wolf, right? Teen Wolf. Yeah, and wolfing wolfing was about the time I I was in high school. So that's a long time ago. There's just been so many great like werewolf movies. To me, the, the, probably the best werewolf movie is underworld. It's a whole series about werewolves and vampires. And I, I'm just like, man, that's so cool.
I know we're talking about this cause well today is Halloween, but also we've got a bottle on the show, which is, uh, It's got a werewolf on the label.
Yeah. So what we're going to drink and we've already had this on show, but I thought it'd be good that we gave it a review. This is actually film land spirits, moonlight mayhem, extended cut.
So this is the full strength version of the midnight mayhem.
Yeah. This is 115 proof, Jim. It's a mash bill.
75, 21 and four, I think. Yeah.
It's a raw mash bill. Yeah.
And this is out of MGP. This is one of MGP's bourbon mash bills. But the bottle's just amazing. I love the label on this. It's an old throwback to a movie poster. Now, we just had this episode that came out just last week, but we wanted to get a little special attention to the extended cut version of this bottle.
Well, you know, on Halloween, you almost have to drink that foolproof, right? Give you that. Foolproof on a full moon? A full moon, that howl. It'll make you start howling at the moon, yeah. But yeah, I'm excited to taste this again. This is your first time tasting it.
Yeah, I haven't had it before. I did get a chance to check out those bottles. I did edit the episode where you guys, because I wasn't able to make it that time, so you actually interviewed these. Troy, I think it was, you had on the show. great episode. I really enjoyed editing it and putting it out. And I know you guys had a good time recording it. So it's nice when I get a chance to drink the whiskey after the fact.
Well, when you look at this in the bottle, the bottle itself is pretty spectacular, right?
Yeah. They've got a really nice bottle and a full wrap label too.
Yeah.
All the way around and no lack of information. I mean, you could sit, it's like a cereal box. You could sit and read that label. for a while, you know?
Well, I would say you put this in the bathroom, put it underneath the counter cabinet and somebody doesn't need something to read. You'd be looking for something. No. But it has, like you said, there's no lack of information on here from the mash bill, uh, to where, where they bottled it at, um, where it was labeled, all that, not overly dark. You know, I might call that a tease.
Yeah. I think it's respectable for, uh, um, for what? 115 proof you said, I think is a respectable color for that.
Yeah. The price on this is a little, little pricey. Um, the $79.99 but you know for $115 proof that's not too bad.
Yeah, I think it's reasonable. With every one of these bottle releases, they also have like a short film that they put out and they write it in-house and they film it and it's really great. I highly recommend our listeners take an opportunity to go to Filmland's website and check out their different whiskey expressions that they have and some of the content they have to support it. I think they'd really enjoy it. But this is their cast drink version. Mike, I think we got to get right into it. What do you say? Let's do it. Not overly sweet, but it's got kind of a deep kind of an oaky caramely nose on it.
Yeah. I get that. Uh, almost a toasted, right?
Almost a toasted, a little bit of earthy note there too. Almost like a. Kind of like a cremini mushroom or something. I don't know. Just kind of a, a earthy note. Like a wet vampire. Like a wet vampire. Yeah.
Yeah. I can get the vanilla's in there. The oak, uh, this is, it smells like an older bourbon, but I know for a fact, this is, uh, around five years old.
Yeah. I think it's between four and five. Is that correct? Or is it right at five?
Yeah.
Yeah, I'm definitely getting that earthy note in it though.
I think it's kind of a, I don't know, dark, some dark fruit in there too. Maybe, you know, we talk about dried strawberries or maybe had prune even. You know, I don't know if you ever eat any prunes or figs. I try not to too often.
Not my favorite fruit. Dried fruit.
Sometimes you have to eat prunes, right? Yeah. You get to a certain age. You might need some of those. They actually got bottles of stuff for that now. I haven't stewed any lately though. Well, you said you were going to say something else besides that. I remember when I was just a couple of episodes ago, you're like, I'm going to stick to that. I was like, I knew we were going to come back to that stewed fruits. But, Yeah. The nose on it, it's not overly great. Uh, it, you know, the alcohol is there at 115. You kind of expect that. Yeah.
Yeah. I think I'd like to taste it.
Let's do it. Cheers. Cheers. Very viscous. Yep. Well, not a lot up front. This is the back of the palette whiskey. Kind of that sweetness kind of rolls over your tongue though. That sugary sweetness, a little bit of vanilla in there.
There's a little bit of a spice in there, kind of a peppery in us a little bit. Um, I'm getting, I'm still getting that earthy note on the palette though. Really?
Yeah. I said last time when I drank this, I said I'd get Werther's candy, and I do get that spicy Werther's original on this. A little bit of buttery, and that's that viscous I'm talking about, that oil. If you ever had a Werther's candy, it is kind of buttery and oily.
Yeah, I could sip on this for a while. This is a, this is a fairly good whiskey. It's certainly not complex. It doesn't have a ton of stuff going on. Uh, but it's a very respectable whiskey. It's, um, I think it's at 115 proof. I think I didn't get to taste the, the, what was the proof of the other one? Like a 90 proof or so. Yeah. Yeah. So this is, uh, I like it at this proof. I'm not so sure that the 90 proof version would be there for me, but I would tend to lean a little bit more towards this higher proof. And I think we do typically.
Yeah. I mean, I thought this was good for Halloween right here. This is, if I was thinking a werewolf was going to drink some bourbon, it'd be this proof right here. Yeah. Nice and spicy.
Now, you could sip on this in between handing out candy on the front porch. Yeah.
I mean, I recommend people, if you're listening to this this morning, right, listeners, and you need to go grab a bottle, go grab a bottle of this and enjoy yourself while you're giving out candy, trick or treating. Or if you got a DD, your spouse is driving you around, get yourself a flask and pour some of this in it.
But if you're going to be giving candy to the kids, don't drink too many of them, right?
Yeah.
I mean, you don't want to hand somebody the family pet and say, here's Fluffy.
I'm out of treats, but you can have Fluffy. Yeah. not a heavy finish, not a long finish on this. I just call it a medium. It's got a nice Kentucky hug though, Jim.
Yeah, it does. It's, it's got a bit of a hug. It does tend to last a little bit. And you know, I just think that this is a fairly good whiskey at, you said $79. Yeah. I think it's a, it's a fair bargain. You're not getting a steel at $79 and you're not getting your money taken out of your pocket either. It's just kind of a good wash. I think it's a, It's a decent whiskey. It's something you ought to try the bottle. It's fantastic. I really think that this would make a great, great addition to a bar or a great bottle to have around.
Like you said on Halloween, if you have some people coming over, I just, the art in it, the, you know, the thought process in it, the transparency they did. I really, really liked that. I also liked that they're veteran owned and operated. Yeah, that's always good. That's always a good thing for us is to see a company like that. Now this thing's get, it's got a little bit of bite in there, you know, it's biting into my tongue now. And that could be the dinner we ate tonight too. I don't know. I tried to clean my, cleanse my pal a little bit, but maybe I didn't cleanse that enough, but I am getting that little bit of bite from that.
Yeah, I think you had three expressions on the show the other day. You had their rye, I think you had their standard strength version of this, and then of course the cast strength version. And they've got a lot of new stuff coming out, I think. Pretty active company, got a lot of new stuff in the works. Out of California?
Yeah, out of LA. They're going to do some different labels and stuff. Everything will be different. I like that about them. It's nice to see a company say, hey, we're not going to put the same thing on a shelf. And this thing definitely sticks out on a shelf. Yeah, it does. Great labels, great bottle, great story.
It was a great episode too, Mike. I really enjoyed it. This bottle in particular is pretty decent. I think I'm enjoying sitting and drinking it with you. I would have no problem sitting out by the fire with you, sitting out on the front porch, sitting in front of a ball game and just sipping through this bottle. So what are we drinking on, Jim? We're drinking on the Moonlight Mayhem. This is the extended cut. So this is the higher proof version of Moonlight Mayhem. 75, 21 and four, that's corn, rye and malted barley, mashbill. It's at 115 proof. It's out of Filmland Spirits out of Los Angeles, California. Definitely something I think our listeners should check out. Definitely if you want to have an interesting bottle that carries a good conversation, this is one of them. The other bottles they have aren't $79.95. They're $49 and $59, I think, right? So they're not all super expensive. I think you should check them out. They're definitely distributed here in Kentucky. They're in California. You can buy them in 40 other states online.
And they are moving fast, expanding, which is nice to see these smaller companies You know, sometimes they struggle with that. They'll like only release in like Texas and Kentucky and California and New York, major markets, right? But these jokers over here at Filmland Spirits, they hit the ground running.
Absolutely. Now they say on the bottle that this particular expression is a saga of werewolves and bourbon, and it's not foolproof.
It's full moon proof. Full moon proof. Full moon proof. Yeah. Yeah. You get yourself in trouble if you tried to drink this whole bottle in a full moon. I'll tell you that right now.
All right, Mike. Well, uh, another great episode, another great review. I think, uh, I'm going to give it a thumbs up. I want to say it's definitely a conversation bottle to have on your bar.
Yeah, I think the same for me. I liked the conversation about it, even though one of their other expressions go out there and buy one today. You know, if you've got that change in your pocket, as we always say, it's up to you. We can only tell you what we think about it, but, uh, it's a, it's a good bourbon. Um, you know.
All right, Michael, where can people find us on the internet?
Well, you can find us on tick tock, Instagram, Facebook, uh, Twitter. Um, I was trying to think of all those places. YouTube. Yeah, there's the one I'm missing.
