Show Notes

Jim Shannon and Mike Hyatt are back at the newly built home bar for another Craft Distillery Monday, and this one has a personal touch. Country Smooth founder and CEO Lori Karchus — widely recognized as the first woman to solo-found a whiskey company in the United States — sent both hosts a bottle of her brand-new small batch American straight bourbon whiskey along with a handwritten note, making them among the very first people to review it publicly. The whiskey is distilled in Indiana, bottled in Tennessee, and clocks in at a smooth 86 proof.

On the Tasting Mat:

  • Country Smooth Small Batch American Straight Bourbon Whiskey (86 Proof): A lighter, younger straight bourbon (stated at least two years, likely two to four years old) that opens with a corn-forward nose reminiscent of corn pop cereal, honeysuckle, and a faint hay or earthy woody quality. On the palate the corn sweetness recedes, giving way to a balanced profile of light caramel sweetness, a touch of rye spice in the mid-palate, and a clean, relatively short finish. The low proof keeps things approachable and smooth throughout. A straw-to-gold color with no amber to speak of confirms its youth. Priced under $30, it's positioned as an accessible everyday pour and a natural fit for summer cocktails. (00:04:12)

Jim and Mike wrap the tasting with genuine enthusiasm for what Lori Karchus has built, encouraging new bourbon drinkers and cocktail lovers alike to seek out Country Smooth in their markets. The guys also tease an upcoming Instagram and Facebook giveaway on the 25th featuring a tasting kit, candle, glassware, and possibly whiskey samples, plus a shout-out to listener Erin from Illinois whose kind words about the classic "What Bourbon Makes Coke Taste Better" episode reminded them it's time to do another one. Several road-trip distillery episodes recorded on the East Coast in Virginia are also on deck for upcoming Wednesdays.
