Show Notes

Jim Shannon and Mike Hyatt are back on the Bourbon Road for their first Craft Distillery Monday of 2022, kicking things off with a bottle that has somehow eluded the show until now. After a brief commiseration about pandemic fatigue and a Groundhog Day metaphor that hits a little too close to home, the guys finally crack open the Smoke Wagon Small Batch Straight Bourbon Whiskey from Nevada H&C Distilling Company out of Las Vegas — and the results are anything but ordinary.

On the Tasting Mat:

  • Smoke Wagon Small Batch Straight Bourbon Whiskey: A 100-proof MGP-sourced bourbon bottled in Las Vegas by Nevada H&C Distilling Company, featuring a mash bill of 60% corn, 36% rye, and 4% malted barley. Jim and Mike find a savory, complex whiskey that punches well above its weight — notes of apple butter, rum cake, vanilla bean, dark dried fruit like dates and Turkish figs, ginger snap cookie with a light char, cinnamon, and a hint of white pepper. The body is surprisingly viscous and creamy for the proof, with a medium-to-long finish and a gentle, warming hug. A stunning bottle design rounds out a package the guys call an easy buy at around $50. (00:08:53)

The episode wraps with Jim and Mike exchanging Christmas gift stories — a 1980 Wild Turkey 101 decanter for Jim, and an 18-year Singleton Scotch for Mike — before the guys look ahead to a full Smoke Wagon guest appearance later in 2022. If you haven't discovered Smoke Wagon yet, Jim and Mike make a pretty compelling case that the time is now.
