Show Notes

Jim Shannon and Mike Hyatt are back with a very special episode dedicated to Jim Beam's brand-new direct-to-consumer whiskey club, Barreled and Boxed. With Kentucky now a shipping state, Beam is opening the doors to a limited membership program — just 500 spots — that delivers rare and exclusive bottles straight to your door every three months. The guys break down exactly how the program works, what it costs, and why it might just be the smartest move a Jim Beam fan can make.

On the Tasting Mat:

  • Little Book Chapter 1 "The Easy" (2017 Release): A 128.2-proof blended straight whiskey from James B. Beam Distilling Company, combining a four-year-old bourbon, a 13-year-old corn whiskey, a six-year-old 100% malt whiskey, and a six-year-old high-rye whiskey. On the nose, expect youthful oak, chewy caramel, a touch of corn, and malted barley character. The palate opens with a brief sweetness before giving way to aggressive spice, pepper, and a drying, nutty finish with a buttery cornbread note on the back end. The Kentucky hug is substantial and lasting, while the flavor finish lands in the medium range. (00:07:06)
  • Little Book Chapter 5 "The Invitation" (2021 Release): A 116.8-proof blended straight whiskey from James B. Beam Distilling Company, marrying a two-year-old Kentucky straight bourbon, a three-year-old 100% malted rye whiskey, a five-year-old Kentucky straight bourbon, and a 15-year-old Kentucky straight bourbon. The nose is richer and sweeter than Chapter 1, with butterscotch, caramel, aged oak, and a subtle floral quality. The palate is full-bodied and texturally thick, with buttery caramel sweetness, rye spice, and a long, coating, peppery finish. Retail price at release was $125. (00:34:04)

Beyond the tasting mat, Jim and Mike share exciting news about upcoming live events — including their own Bourbon Road Lounge tent at Bourbon on the Banks in Frankfort, Kentucky on October 23rd, and a spot as emcee at Duck Duck Bourbon on September 25th benefiting Shelby County Habitat for Humanity. They also tease a limited bourbon auction the evening before the festival and a giveaway of four tickets to Bourbon on the Banks for the Bourbon Roadies community. Whether you're chasing rare Beam releases or just love great whiskey conversation, this one's worth every sip.
