113.8 proof
7–9 years
Single Malt
New Riff Distillery
Lawrenceburg, KY
$70
Five malts including Maris Otter, Golden Promise, barley wine style, Belgian quadruple, and ~10% Scottish peated malt
Nose
Kaleidoscopic and ever-changing: sweet feed molasses, dark cherry, green banana, vanilla icing, honey-almond notes. Underlying tobacco quality. Rich, dark, and almost syrupy character.
Palate
Rich, full-bodied, and mouth-coating. Leather, dark dried fruit (prune, raisin), and nutty sherry notes dominate. Concentrated and complex with tobacco undertones. Some spice present.
Finish
Long, warming finish with continuing leather, dark fruit, and nutty sherry character. Suitable for pairing with a premium cigar.
Very good
A complex, full-strength malt whiskey with dark fruit and sherried depth that rewards evening contemplation, though the abundance of barrel influences sometimes competes rather than harmonizes.
