How many bourbons have you tried from the state of Utah?
A good friend of Big Chief gave him a bottle of Sugar House Distillery Bourbon Whiskey. At 92 proof and with a mash bill of 75% corn, 20% rye and 5% malted barley, made in small batches, it is something just a little different. It is available in their gift shop for $39.99. A great bottle with an excellent label.
You may not think of distilling and Utah together, but distilling has a long history in the state, dating clear back into the 1800’s. Following those traditions, Sugar House Distillery received Federal approval in September 2013 and State approval in 2014, to begin producing their own spirits. Selecting only the finest ingredients, using locally sourced corn, and cultivating their own proprietary yeast strains, Sugar House Distillery began their journey towards whiskey production.
What does The Bourbon Road do with a new bottle of bourbon whiskey? Well you know, Jim and Big Chief just had to sit down and review it for themselves.
Tasting Notes: Sugar House Distillery Bourbon Whiskey
Vital Stats: 75% corn, 20% rye and 5% malted barley. 46% ABV. $39.99/750ml. Bottled at 92 proof.
Appearance: Amber in color
Nose: New oak with hints of spice and sweet caramel. Rye bread with just a tad bit of vanilla.
Palate: A little bitter of the front and then the caramel sweetness hits you. Cheery twizzlers with a light spice. The oak is very faint. This bottle has surprised us both.
Overall: This is a great sipper which Jim would call a fall or winter bourbon while Big Chief would call it a spring or summer bourbon. We would call this a buy for both of us. Not a bad price for a craft bourbon.
