Show Notes

Jim Shannon and Mike Hyatt are back in Bourbon Road Studio 1A — a.k.a. Big Jim Shannon's Bar Lounge — for another craft-focused short episode that once again makes room for a heavy hitter from the big leagues. This week the pair zero in on a brand-new limited release that landed on shelves just days before recording, exploring the science and sensory magic behind one of Maker's Mark's most ambitious wood-finishing experiments yet.

On the Tasting Mat:

  • Maker's Mark Wood Finishing Series 2021 Limited Release FAE-02: The second entry in Maker's Mark's Fatty Acid Ester series, bottled at 109.1 proof and finished with 10 virgin toasted French oak staves. Non-age-stated but believed to be in the 8–12 year range. Non-chill filtered. The nose opens with rich, deep floral notes — full roses — alongside orange zest, a hint of cereal, and a faint cocoa/baker's chocolate quality. On the palate the standout characteristic is an exceptionally thick, velvety mouthfeel punctuated by a lively Pop Rocks-style sizzle. Orange zest carries through from nose to tongue, accompanied by dark cherry, white chocolate, and a long, warming Kentucky hug of a finish. Retail price: $59.99. (00:01:11)

Jim and Mike close out the tasting with high marks and strong buy recommendations, noting that Maker's Master Distiller Denny Potter and the Samuels family have delivered something genuinely special in a bottle that delivers on its fatty-acid mouthfeel promise without sacrificing the fruity complexity that characterized the first FAE release. If you spot it on a shelf, they say, pick it up — availability is expected to broaden in the weeks following release. As always, the crew invites listeners to join the Bourbon Roadies Facebook group (2,300 members strong), leave a five-star review, and grab some Bourbon Road swag at thebourbonroad.com.
