Show Notes

Jim Shannon and Brian Hyatt are back in the studio fresh off the 2023 Kentucky Bourbon Festival in Bardstown, Kentucky, and they're bringing the energy of the event straight to your glass. This week the duo recaps three to four days of bourbon immersion — the crowds, the craft distillery section, the media tent, and the standout pours that stuck with them long after the last dram was poured. From rubbing elbows with fellow podcasters like Scott from the Bourbon Lens and Chris Blattner from Urban Bourbonist to discovering mystery bottles and festival-exclusive expressions, Jim and Brian walk you through what made the 2023 KBF one of the biggest and most memorable yet.

On the Tasting Mat:

  • Filmland Spirits Moonlight Mayhem Extended Cut (Blind Pig Single Barrel Selection), Cask Strength Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey: A 115.1-proof single barrel from MGP's 75% corn, 21% rye, 4% malted barley mash bill, selected by Bardstown's The Blind Pig liquor store. The nose opens with a beautifully subdued cherry hand pie and buttery crust quality that belies its strength, while the palate delivers cherry, dark chocolate, and a deep leathery oak backbone. The finish is medium length, sweet, and lingers warmly on the mid-palate. A double gold winner at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition and priced around $85 for a store pick bottle. (00:02:41)
  • Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey: The flagship 90-proof expression from Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. Light amber in color, the palate is approachable and easy-drinking with notes of brown sugar, vanilla, mint, molasses, and a gentle oak presence. A reliable and often findable bottle in the high-$20s range that served as the jumping-off point for a larger conversation about Buffalo Trace's impressive showing at the festival, where they poured Eagle Rare, Colonel E.H. Taylor, Weller Special Reserve, Thomas H. Handy, and 1792 Sweet Wheat side by side. (00:14:37)
  • Lucky 7 Spirits The Jokester Six-Year Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey: A 95-proof, six-year-old Kentucky straight bourbon crafted under the oversight of Master Distiller and Blender Ashley Barnes. The palate is thick and viscous with a richness that punches above its proof, delivering caramel, butter, toasted nuts, and a sweet, well-balanced finish. A 90-point Whiskey Advocate score and multiple gold medals back up what Jim describes as all-around great quality at a modest craft premium of around $85. (00:24:54)
  • Jay Mattingly for Bourbon 30 "Big Bad Wolf of Bardstown" Single Barrel Straight Bourbon Whiskey (The Blind Pig Store Pick): A one-of-a-kind, never-to-be-repeated 118-proof store pick selected exclusively for The Blind Pig in Bardstown. Handwritten labels and a high-proof punch define this Jay Mattingly release, which Brian describes as a "big boy" pour with serious heat and depth. Rich and full-bodied on the palate, it is the kind of barrel-strength expression meant to be savored slowly and shared with good company. (00:42:35)

Beyond the tasting mat, Jim and Brian give well-deserved call-outs to the Broken Barrel Spirits wheated whiskey poured by Seth behind his festival tent, the Barry Briniger mystery bottle from RD1 Spirits, the Bardstown Bourbon Company Discovery Series #9, the Four Square rum barrel finish collab from BBC, and the Barrelcraft Spirits festival-exclusive 10-year expression. The episode closes with a strong nudge to grab your 2024 Kentucky Bourbon Festival tickets early and a reminder that Bourbon on the Banks in Frankfort, Kentucky is coming up October 6th and 7th — don't wait on those either.
