Show Notes

Jim Shannon and Todd Ritter welcome back a familiar face to the Corner Rickhouse in Frankfort, home of the Frankfort Bourbon Society, for a four-bottle craft whiskey tasting that spans Kentucky, Missouri, North Carolina, and Ohio. Joining them for his sixth appearance is Drew Hanisch of Whiskey Lore, fresh off a drive from South Carolina on his way to the Distilled Spirits Epicenter (BEAM) Conference at the University of Kentucky. The conversation moves from the history of the Bottled-in-Bond Act and low entry proof distillation to the stories behind resurrected pre-Prohibition brand names, with Drew sharing a preview of his new travel guide, Experiencing American Whiskey.

On the Tasting Mat:

  • James E. Pepper Bottled in Bond Bourbon: A 100-proof (50% ABV) straight bourbon from the historic James E. Pepper Distillery in Lexington, Kentucky, believed to use malted rye and a low barrel entry proof. Tasting notes include smoky oak on the nose, rich caramel and dark fruit mid-palate, and a finish that starts spicy and dries out cleanly with a lingering herbal rye character. Retails around $50–$60. (00:03:34)
  • 1832 Distilling Missouri Straight Wheat Whiskey (Single Barrel): A 100% wheat whiskey from Concordia, Missouri, made by farmer-founded 1832 Distilling Co. and aged 56 months in new charred Missouri white oak barrels at 108.2 proof (54.1% ABV). The nose opens with stewed dark fruit, plum butter, and warehouse earthiness, while the palate delivers banana, juicy fruit, apple butter, and a spicy sassafras-root-beer finish with an oily, butter-streaked glass. MSRP approximately $45. (00:12:53)
  • Southern Star Spirits Straight Bourbon Finished in Zinfandel Cask (Limited Release): A cask-strength (54% ABV / 108 proof) 375ml limited release from Southern Star Spirits in North Carolina, finished in red Zinfandel casks for over a year. Deep cola color. The nose is restrained with overripe raspberry and dark berry notes; the palate leans toward chocolate, praline, French oak tannins, and grape, with a profile that reads more brandy- or cognac-adjacent than a traditional bourbon. MSRP approximately $49.95 for 375ml. (00:36:09)
  • Bell of Dayton Dietrich Fine Whiskeys Full Proof Single Barrel Straight Bourbon: A five-grain (corn, oats, rye, wheat, malted barley) straight bourbon from Bell of Dayton in the Oregon District of Dayton, Ohio, pot-stilled in a 350-gallon copper still and aged 8.5 years in hand-toasted #4 char 53-gallon white oak barrels. Bottled at full proof — 123.2 proof (61.6% ABV) — bottle 129 of 191. The nose offers orange peel, fresh candy sweetness, and warm warehouse oak; the palate layers cinnamon oatmeal, black tea, praline, and a mid-palate tingle that settles into a long, balanced finish. MSRP approximately $97.99. (00:32:53)

Todd's lineup proves that outstanding craft whiskey is alive and well far beyond Kentucky's borders. From a Lexington bottled-in-bond with historic ties to the very law that created the standard, to a farm-direct Missouri wheat whiskey that genuinely surprises, a wine-cask experiment that blurs the line between bourbon and brandy, and a pot-still Ohio single barrel that drinks far gentler than its proof suggests, this is an episode for anyone eager to venture off the beaten bourbon trail. Find Drew Hanisch at whiskylore.org and on Instagram at @whiskeylore, and keep an eye out for his new book Experiencing American Whiskey, available for pre-order now.
