Show Notes

Welcome back to The Bourbon Road! In episode 77, hosts Jim Shannon and Mike Hyatt sit down — virtually via StreamYard — with Lori Kerstage, founder and CEO of Country Smooth American Whiskey, who makes a compelling case for being America's first female founder and CEO of an American whiskey company. Based out of Orange County, California, Lori brings her business acumen, her love of country music, and her passion for the great outdoors to a brand she built from the ground up, starting with a deep dive into market research back in 2015 and launching sales in Southern California in January 2016.

On the Tasting Mat:

  • Country Smooth American Whiskey (86 Proof): A young American whiskey aged at least six months and under two years, made from a 93% corn mash bill, sourced out of Indiana and bottled in Nashville, Tennessee. Retailing around $26 for a fifth, this bottle punches above its age with a nose of butterscotch, caramel, kettle corn, and hints of pear or peach. On the palate it delivers silky, approachable flavors of pear, apple, banana, allspice, and a light touch of mint, with a gentle warmth that builds on the back end rather than the front. The mouthfeel is light and clean at 86 proof, making it equally enjoyable neat, over a large ice cube, or mixed into a Country Mule or Berry Smooth cocktail. The entire package — glass, cap, and seed — is proudly made in the USA, and five stars embossed on the bottle represent all five branches of the U.S. military. (00:02:08)

Lori opens up about her journey from CPA auditor to whiskey entrepreneur, the meaning behind the Country Smooth name and bottle design, the brand's military outreach through the Navy Exchange and foundations like Brothers in Arms, the Country Chorale live-streaming concert series supporting up-and-coming country artists during COVID, and the exciting but still-under-wraps second expression — aged at least four years — currently in its final stages of formulation. Jim and Mike also flip the script and let Lori interview them about their Kentucky farms, proving that the best conversations on The Bourbon Road flow in every direction.
