Show Notes

Welcome back to The Bourbon Road, where hosts Jim Shannon and Mike Hyatt pour their passion for American whiskey into every episode. This week, the guys turn their attention to a legendary Kentucky distillery that spent 57 years crafting a single expression before daring to innovate — and the result has clearly made a lasting impression on Mike in particular. It's a weeded bourbon, cast strength, and brand new for fall, so settle in with your favorite glass and let them walk you through it.

On the Tasting Mat:

  • Maker's Mark 46 Cask Strength: A weeded bourbon bottled at 109.6 proof, finished with French oak stave inserts using the proprietary stave profile developed by Bill Samuels Jr. over 46 iterations of experimentation. Distilled at Maker's Mark Distillery in Loretto, Kentucky and released as a limited fall edition. On the nose, rich leather, tobacco, and stone fruit open up into cinnamon and oak as the glass breathes. The palate delivers an immediate wave of sweetness on the front of the tongue with hints of corn and wheat, followed by a building cinnamon spice and a buttery, warming finish that the guys describe as a campfire hug that simply doesn't leave. At $55 a bottle and distributed nationally as a limited release, Jim and Mike both make a strong case for grabbing this one while it lasts — whether for your own bar, a fireside evening, or as a gift for the high-proof weeded whiskey lover in your life. If you're in the Shelbyville, Kentucky area, don't miss Mike leading a Weller brand tasting at the OLB Barrel Room on November 14th — four expressions, $35, and stories included. Find tickets through the Bourbon Roadies private Facebook group or at thebourbonroad.com.
