Show Notes

Jim Shannon and Mike Hyatt settle in beside a roaring fire at Jump the Bend with Woodrow at their feet for a cold, snowy evening of wheated bourbon exploration. The guys dig into what makes limited and special-release bottles worth hunting down — from standing in line at four in the morning to simply lucking into a bottle at retail — and share their general philosophy on when to pay up and when to walk away. Along the way, the conversation wanders into bubble-proof tests, painted bottle tops, manwiches, Corvettes, and the ever-expanding ambitions of Wilderness Trail. Whether you are a seasoned wheated bourbon devotee or just starting to appreciate the softer side of American whiskey, this episode offers a warm, unhurried ride down the Bourbon Road.

On the Tasting Mat:

  • New Riff Red Turkey Wheat Bottled in Bond: A 100-proof, non-chill-filtered wheated bourbon from New Riff Distilling in Newport, Kentucky. Mash bill is 70% corn, 25% Red Turkey wheat, and 5% malted barley, aged no less than five years. Red Turkey is a heritage American wheat variety dating to the 1870s, prized by artisan bakers and distillers for its rich, grain-forward character. The nose opens with sweet, floral, and lightly fruity notes alongside a touch of oak and gentle ethanol warmth. On the palate it delivers a zesty brightness — a little pop-rocks tingle on the sides of the tongue — with a soft, sweet front and a warming hug on the finish. Sweetness builds and softens with each sip, making it an approachable yet characterful daily drinker. Retail price approximately $50. (00:06:59)
  • Maker's Mark DNA Series — 125 Entry Proof (Barrel #125.4): Part of Maker's Mark's experimental DNA Series, this wheated bourbon was barreled in 2013 on the fourth floor of Warehouse 30 and released from 60 of 100 experimental barrels. The series explores four different barrel-entry proofs — 110, 115, 120, and 125 — to study how proof at entry shapes flavor over time. This expression comes in at 125.4 proof, sealed behind the signature red wax with a screw cap. The nose is intensely sweet, almost maple-syrup-like and concentrated, with a rich, sugary depth. On the palate it is full-bodied and viscous with prominent legs in the glass, delivering upfront sweetness and pronounced baking spices — cinnamon and a warming, lingering heat on the back of the tongue reminiscent of an atomic fireball candy. The finish is long and mouth-watering despite the label's descriptor of "drying." Retail price $100 per bottle, $400 for the full four-bottle set. (00:31:28)

Jim and Mike close out the episode looking ahead at the wave of limited releases still filtering onto shelves — from Pappy Van Winkle and the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection to Rebel Reserve 12-Year Single Barrel, Bernheim Original Wheat Whiskey Barrel Proof, and the Heaven Hill Select Stock age statements — reminding listeners that the bourbon boom shows no signs of slowing down.
