Show Notes

Jim Shannon and Brian Hyatt saddle up for a Tennessee-themed ride down the Bourbon Road, pouring through a lineup of whiskeys that prove the Volunteer State has plenty to offer beyond its most famous label. From the historically rich Uncle Nearest 1856 to a pot-distilled 100% rye out of Pennington Distillery, and a Frank Sinatra-inspired collector's release from Jack Daniel's, this episode is a love letter to Tennessee whiskey in all its forms. Jim also shares road reports from the Tennessee Whiskey Trail Experience grand tasting in Nashville, where he and Millie spent four hours sampling from nearly forty distilleries at the Ascend Amphitheater.

On the Tasting Mat:

  • Uncle Nearest 1856 Premium Whiskey (100 proof): A Tennessee straight whiskey with a warm honey and caramel nose carrying a touch of dried hay and a hint of ethanol at proof. The palate opens with rich sweetness, settling into buttery oak, light nuttiness, and a medium-to-long finish with a gentle spice fade. Bottled at 100 proof and priced around $50, it's described as an essential bar staple with serious historical weight behind it. (00:05:58)
  • Jack Daniel's Sinatra Select (90 proof, 1 liter): A special release bottled in a heavy, square-base one-liter bottle featuring a miniature Sinatra fedora on the neck. The nose leads with banana bread and ripe fruit. The palate delivers prominent banana, sweet cherries, raisin, and noticeable oak in a velvety, sweet profile. The finish is smooth and medium in length. Retails in the $165–$200 range and produced in a one-liter format. (00:24:22)
  • Davidson Reserve Tennessee Straight Rye Whiskey (100 proof): Pot-distilled from 100% locally sourced Tennessee white cereal rye by Pennington Distillery, this expression leans deeply herbal on the nose — spearmint, fresh thyme-like aromatics, and a drizzle of maple syrup. The palate is vibrant with holiday spice, spearmint, light cinnamon, and a whisper of apple, delivering a clean and refreshing rye experience. Priced in the $50–$60 range and widely available. Beyond the glass, Jim recounts highlights from the Tennessee Whiskey Trail Experience in Nashville — including standout pours from Company Distilling's award-winning rye (helmed by former Jack Daniel's master distiller Jeff Arnett), Old Dominick Distillery's three-batch bottled-in-bond lineup, and an on-the-spot discovery that Old Smoky's banana pudding moonshine had just taken an Ascot Award. The crew also previews upcoming episodes featuring Bluegrass Distillers in Lexington, a return trip to Tennessee's Pigeon Forge region, and a live barrel pick for Bourbon on the Banks — returning to Frankfort, Kentucky on October 6th and 7th with Lawrenceburg Bourbon Company pouring in the Bourbon Road tent.
