Show Notes

Jim Shannon and Todd Ritter welcome Jeffrey Wack — Cincinnati-based whiskey enthusiast, co-host of the YouTube channel Hello Again Whiskey Friends, and longtime friend of the show — to the Frankfort Bourbon Society Corner Rick House for one of Todd's signature comparison tastings. The trio dives deep into four consecutive annual releases of the Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch, a lineup that showcases master distiller Brent Elliott's ever-evolving craft of blending multiple recipes and ages into a single, exceptional annual statement bottle. Along the way, the conversation touches on Jeffrey's barrel-picking adventures, the Hello Again Whiskey Friends Patreon and YouTube community, and memories of Brent Elliott's recent visit to the Corner Rick House.

On the Tasting Mat:

  • Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch 2021: At 114.2 proof and drawn from barrels aged 12 to 16 years, this release blends the OBS-Q, OBS-V, OES-V, and OES-K recipes. The nose leaps forward with French vanilla, strawberry taffy, and bright floral notes driven by the Q yeast strain. On the palate it delivers a creamy, spice-forward entry that transitions into vibrant citrus and raspberry mid-palate, with a long, lingering finish underscored by well-integrated oak and sweetness. 14,880 bottles produced. • Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch 2022: Clocking in at 109 proof, this expression blends the OES-K, OES-F, and OES-V recipes across barrel ages ranging from 14 to 20 years, with one component at 20 years old. The nose is oak-forward and grounded, offering brown sugar, nutty caramel, nougat, and a faint root beer herbal note. The palate is drier and more structured than the 2021, with tannin-driven grip on the sides of the tongue giving way to a bright orange marmalade citrus note on the finish. Approximately 14,100–15,600 bottles produced. (00:21:36)
  • Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch 2023: Released at 108 proof to mark the brand's 135th anniversary, this blend combines a 12-year OES-K (40%), a 12-year OES-V (35%), a 16-year OES-V (20%), and a rare 5% splash of 25-year-old OBS-V — one of the oldest components ever used in the series. The nose is delicate and pastry-like, evoking a raspberry-filled jelly donut with vanilla cream icing. On the palate, the fruits arrive fresh and juicy at the front, deepening through the mid-palate before the ancient oak reveals itself quietly on a long, layered finish. 15,060 bottles produced. (00:31:43)
  • Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch 2024: At 108.2 proof, this release blends a 12-year OBS-V (31%), a 15-year OES-K (23%), a 16-year OES-F (39%), and a 7% component of 20-year-old OBS-V. The F yeast brings a distinctive herbal, dry-leaf character to the nose alongside cigar box, pipe tobacco, and restrained citrus. The palate is notably silky in texture, with delicate stone fruits — peach, apricot, and plum — layered over a spice backbone. Oak is present but understated, letting the fruit and texture shine through to a warm, chest-warming finish. Approximately 15,000–16,000 bottles produced. (00:41:43)

Todd also pours a bonus glass of his recreation of his Blendageddon-winning blend — a vatting of all three 2020 Elijah Craig Barrel Proof batches anchored by a 1980s Heaven Hill 10-Year Bottled-in-Bond at 100 proof, the 2.0 version of the blend that originally featured an 86-proof export bottled-in-bond. Rich, concentrated, and high-proof, it serves as a celebratory nightcap and a testament to what thoughtful home blending can produce.

Jeffrey Wack brings a sharp palate and an infectious enthusiasm for community-driven whiskey culture to the Corner Rick House. Whether you're hunting down a Four Roses LE in the wild, catching Jeffrey and his crew live every Wednesday on YouTube, or just enjoying a great pour at your local bourbon bar, this episode is a reminder that the best whiskey experiences are always shared ones.
