Show Notes

Jim Shannon and Todd Ritter are back in the Corner Rickhouse with the Frankfort Bourbon Society for another sample review session. This week's lineup is stacked with some genuinely exciting pours — from a rare experimental release that had bourbon fans refreshing their inboxes, to a cigar-forward blend that takes a creative approach to whiskey pairing, to a Japanese-oak-finished showstopper, and a cask-strength statement from a brand that has been quietly leveling up.

On the Tasting Mat:

  • Old Forester Birthday Bourbon 2025: 92 proof, 12 years old, Kentucky straight bourbon. Notably distilled as a sweet mash experiment 12 years ago under emeritus distiller Chris Morris and assistant master distiller Caleb Trigo. Aged in Warehouse K, floors one through five. The nose opens with classic Old Forester cherry character, walnut, and a surprising hint of bubblegum. On the palate it is soft and approachable, with candied cherry, bright fruit, and a finish that punches well above its proof. (00:01:52)
  • Penelope Cigar Sessions: 101 proof, approximately 6 years old, American whiskey. A blend of straight bourbon, American single malt, and American light whiskey, specifically crafted to complement a medium-bodied cigar. The nose shows cotton candy, bubblegum, bready malt, and stewed stone fruit. The palate delivers candied peach, dried stone fruit, single malt richness, and a broad, lingering sweetness — reminiscent of grilled peach dusted with crystal sugar. (00:11:06)
  • Bardstown Bourbon Company Hokkaido Mizunara Oak Barrel Finish: 109.3 proof, finished 28 months in Japanese Mizunara oak. A blend of four straight whiskeys: 47% Kentucky 15-year (75/13/8/12 mash bill), 33% Kentucky 14-year (78/10/12 mash bill), 15% Indiana 9-year rye (45/51/4 mash bill), and 5% Tennessee 18-year (84/8/8 mash bill). The nose presents sassafras spice, new leather, and a savory depth that Mizunara uniquely contributes. The palate is buttery and rich with baked pear, Danish butter cookie, and layered oak spice across an elegant, lingering finish. (00:26:11)
  • Jefferson's Reserve Cask Strength: 130 proof, approximately 8 years old, Kentucky straight bourbon believed to be Jefferson's own distillate. The nose is surprisingly floral — cherry blossoms and bright fruit, with a gentle warmth at barrel proof. On the palate, maraschino and amaretto cherries take center stage alongside rich nuttiness, new and mature oak, and a sweet almond-driven finish that makes an impression well beyond its price point. (00:33:44)

Jim and Todd also dig into a wave of industry news, including the Woodford Reserve 12-year American Single Malt distillery series release, the opening of Pursuit Spirits' new Whiskey Row space in Louisville, Fred Minnick's upcoming memoir centered on Old Crow, Buffalo Trace's planned John G. Carlyle Café, and a Laney Wilson collaboration bottle from Barman 1873. Whether you are chasing unicorns or hunting everyday shelf finds, this episode has something worth raising a glass to.
