Show Notes

Jim Shannon and Mike Hyatt are back together for a full-length episode of The Bourbon Road, settling in with a couple of fresh spring releases that have bourbon hunters buzzing. After catching up on what's been opening back up across Kentucky, night-shift recovery, upcoming travel plans, and the season's most talked-about allocated drops, the guys get straight to the glass for two very different but equally compelling pours.

On the Tasting Mat:

  • Blood Oath Pact No. 7 (Lux Row Distillers): A blended bourbon clocking in at 98.6 proof — a deliberately chosen number — this release combines a 14-year rye bourbon, an 8-year rye bourbon, and an 8-year rye bourbon finished in Sauternes wine barrels. The nose opens with big oak, molasses, caramel, and a bakery-like warmth reminiscent of cinnamon rolls. On the palate, it is creamy and rich, moving from cinnamon and baking spice into white raisins and a cocoa-dusted finish that Adam Boothby, a top Bourbon Roadie, described simply as "oh my." The finish is medium in length, pleasant rather than lingering, with dry chocolate and apricot rounding things out. Retails around $100 and comes in a laser-engraved gift box. (00:09:33)
  • Larceny Barrel Proof Batch A121 (Heaven Hill Distillers): A wheated bourbon bottled at 114.8 proof with no water added, this batch pours noticeably dark and hits the nose immediately with Werther's Original butterscotch, local honey, and a hint of floral rose. At barrel proof it is surprisingly gentle on the nose, with almost no ethanol heat. The palate is thick and viscous — creamy upfront with a Pop Rocks-like burst across the mid-palate, then rolling into molasses, butterscotch, and a soft oak backbone. The Kentucky hug is real and sustained. Not a summer-porch sipper, but an ideal fall or winter fireside pour. Retails around $50. (00:27:07)

On the Tasting Mat:

Beyond the glass, Jim and Mike talk through the broader spring and early summer release calendar — from Old Fitzgerald Bottled in Bond and Weller CYPB to Wild Turkey Master's Keep Toasted Oak and Woodford Reserve's new Brandy Finish 375. The guys also preview upcoming giveaways featuring Old Salt Coffee Company and Buffalo Trace Bourbon Cream, share their go-to summer sippers, and remind listeners that the Bourbon Roadies private Facebook group is the place to be for bourbon community, bottle hunting tips, and the occasional bread pudding debate.
