Show Notes

Jim Shannon and Todd Ritter welcome Diane Strong, founder of the Bourbon on the Banks Festival, back to the Corner Rick House in Frankfort, Kentucky for a special preview episode. With the festival just over five weeks away, the trio sits down to work through four of the twelve official Bourbon on the Banks single barrel picks — bottles chosen by the festival team that will be available exclusively in distillery tents on October 4th, 2025. Diane shares the latest news about the event, including a new title sponsor, a free after-party headlined by American Idol winner Noah Thompson, expanded VIP programming celebrating women in bourbon, and a brand-new brunch option at two of Frankfort's newest boutique hotels.

On the Tasting Mat:

  • Angel's Envy Port Finish Bourbon — Bourbon on the Banks Single Barrel Pick: A rich, savory port-finished bourbon sourced from the Angel's Envy warehouse. The nose opens with overripe dark berries, fortified wine, a touch of campfire smokiness, and warm vanilla. The palate is concentrated and plush, leaning toward tawny port characteristics with dried fruit, vanilla cream, and a savory backbone that keeps the sweetness in check. An approachable, crowd-pleasing pour that would pair beautifully with a premium cigar. Proof estimated in the 107–111 range. (00:04:06)
  • Casey Jones Rye Whiskey — Bourbon on the Banks Single Barrel Pick, Barrel #838: An approximately seven-to-eight-year Kentucky straight rye from Casey Jones Distillery in western Kentucky, chosen blind without knowledge of the mash bill. The nose delivers dark fruit, fresh mint, forest floor, honey, and a subtle tobacco note. The palate follows with candied orange, caramel apple, and a chewy mid-palate that skews sweeter and more approachable than a classic high-rye. A true bourbon drinker's rye, this expression surprises those unfamiliar with the style. (00:11:49)
  • Bespoken Spirits 12-Year Bourbon — Bourbon on the Banks Single Barrel Pick (Riesling Finish): A twelve-year Barton-sourced bourbon finished in Riesling wine barrels by Lexington, Kentucky's Bespoken Spirits. The nose is deeply concentrated, offering aged oak richness layered with white grape, and an unexpected bubble-gum sweetness reminiscent of fruit-forward confections. The palate is massively flavored and viscous — one of the most intense pours of the evening — with the Riesling finish adding a subtle brightness that lifts the mature oak and vanilla core. Estimated to retail around $199 per bottle. (00:26:38)
  • Short Barrel / OZ Tyler (Green River) 8-Year Bourbon — Bourbon on the Banks Single Barrel Pick, 135.7 Proof: An eight-year straight bourbon distilled at the former OZ Tyler Distillery (now Green River) in Owensboro, Kentucky, and selected by Atlanta-based non-distiller producer Short Barrel. Bottled at 135.7 proof, the nose presents pipe tobacco, cherry tobacco, mature oak, and rich caramel before opening up with a little blow across the glass. The palate is strikingly smooth for the proof, delivering milk chocolate, dark cherry, leather, crème brûlée caramel, chewy nougat, vanilla cream icing, and a whisper of coconut, with a woodsy, sandalwood-tinged savory finish. (00:37:47)

Jim, Todd, and Diane wrap up the tasting with each host selecting a personal favorite from the four pours before encouraging listeners to act fast on remaining Twilight tickets, the Friday bourbon pairing with Peggy No Stevens, and the VIP event — all available at bourbononthebanks.org. Whether you are a longtime roadie making the annual pilgrimage or a first-timer considering a trip to Frankfort, this episode makes a compelling case that the barrel program alone is worth the price of admission.
