What’s your favorite  Knob Creek Expression?

We loved the Knob Creek 12year, so when we caught sight of a bottle of the recently released Knob Creek1 2 Cask Strength we snatched it up. Big Chief hid it away in his bourbon stash until we could review.

Before jumping into the review, here a few “did you know” tidbits about Knob Creek.   Did you know that the Knob Creek label was first used in 1898 while owned by Penn-Maryland Corporation, which was a division of National Distillers?   That’s right, the Knob Creek you see today came about after Jim Beam purchased National Distillers in 1987.    It was then that the Knob Creek name was brought back to life.    The name comes from an actual creek in Kentucky.   It’s said that the creek ran through Abraham Lincoln’s family farm.   We can’t claim it to be absolute truth, but the story certainly bring about images and wonders of the past.

Tasting Notes: Knob Creek 12 Cask Strength

Vital Stats: 12 year small batch bourbon has a mashbill of 77% Corn, 13% Rye, 10% Malted Barley. It has a $90 MSRP. At 120.5 proof it won’t disappoint.

Nose: Strong brown Sugar and sorghum molasses. Baked cherry pie, a dark buttery pie crust with oak and walnuts. Sweet and rich with vanilla and caramel.

Palate: Wow, this is some grown woman whiskey. Brown sugar sweetness and as it rolls back the spice kicks in. Drying on the back end with the rich notes of oak. This bourbon is like drinking a rich pecan pie in from a bottle. This is a bold whiskey with hints of smoking tobacco and rich leather.

Finish: Long, lingering, rich and complex. What you should expect from this proof. This is something to wow your guest with. Definitely not a gateway bourbon.

Overall: This is obviously a buy for both Jim and Big Chief. If you’re looking for a traditional high proof bourbon to have your shelf we would suggest this be it.
