Show Notes

Jim Shannon and Mike Hyatt pull up a chair and pour a glass of their own hometown bourbon on this week's episode of The Bourbon Road. Nearly 200 episodes in, the guys finally give the full spotlight treatment to the whiskey made just down the road from both of their houses — Bulleit Bourbon, the frontier whiskey produced right there in Shelby County, Kentucky. It's a long overdue homecoming for a bottle that's become one of the most recognizable Kentucky straight bourbons in the world.

On the Tasting Mat:

  • Bulleit Bourbon (Frontier Whiskey): Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey bottled at 90 proof with a high-rye mash bill of 68% corn, 28% rye, and 4% malted barley. Non-age stated but estimated around six to eight years old, distilled and bottled by Bulleit Distilling Co. out of Shelbyville, Shelby County, Kentucky. On the nose, Jim picks up leather, oak, a touch of spice, and a hint of mint, with Mike adding some floral notes typical of a high-rye grain bill. The palate leans toward the mid- and rear-palate with rye-forward spice, modest vanilla, and just enough corn sweetness to identify it as a bourbon. The finish is medium-length with a gentle warming quality the guys describe as a Kentucky hug, and a slight bitterness on the back end from the lack of forward sweetness. (00:03:04)

Beyond the tasting, Jim and Mike celebrate everything Shelby County has to offer — from the Bulleit Distillery visitor experience and its cocktail bar, to Paradise Spirits, Saddlebred Suites, and the local dining scene in downtown Shelbyville. The guys also remind listeners that Bourbon on the Banks is coming to Frankfort, Kentucky on October 23rd, with a bottle auction on Friday night and plenty of events throughout the weekend. Whether you're a longtime Bulleit drinker or have never cracked a bottle, this hometown tribute is a fun reminder that great bourbon can be right in your own backyard.
