Show Notes

Jim Shannon and Mike Hyatt settle in at Jephthah Bend Farm for Bourbon Heritage Month with something a little different — a full vertical tasting of the newly expanded Benchmark line from Buffalo Trace Distillery. Named for the McAfee brothers, three surveyors who crossed the Appalachians in 1773 and set benchmarks across what would become Kentucky, the line traces its commercial roots back to a Seagrams release in 1960 before Sazerac acquired the brand in 1989. With six bottles lined up from 80 proof to 125 proof, Jim and Mike walk the entire spectrum, noting how each expression reflects a different warehouse philosophy, proof point, and price-to-value proposition. Woodrow the dog holds down the floor while the boys do the hard work.

On the Tasting Mat:

  • Benchmark Old No. 8 (Entry Level): 80 proof Kentucky straight bourbon, aged at least 36 months, distilled at Buffalo Trace Distillery, Frankfort, KY. Light apple-juice color with pronounced corn sweetness on the nose giving way to a mild mid-palate and a slightly bitter finish that fades quickly. Best suited for mixing. (00:06:48)
  • Benchmark Top Floor: 86 proof Kentucky straight bourbon, no age statement (assumed 4+ years), distilled at Buffalo Trace Distillery. Noticeably darker than the entry expression with a crisper nose — green apple, light oak, and a hint of fruit. Mid-palate picks up a touch of apple and corn sweetness with a modest but present finish. (00:10:36)
  • Benchmark Small Batch: 90 proof Kentucky straight bourbon, no age statement, distilled at Buffalo Trace Distillery. Deeper caramel and butterscotch on the nose with hints of vanilla oak. A little pepper on the back end and a drying mid-palate effect, though the body remains relatively light for the proof point. (00:20:43)
  • Benchmark Single Barrel: 95 proof Kentucky straight bourbon, no age statement (rumored 10 years), distilled at Buffalo Trace Distillery. Rich and syrupy on the nose with sorghum molasses, dried fig, crisp apple, and honey butter. The palate opens with butterscotch and caramel through the mid, a drying oak tail, and a noticeably longer finish than the earlier expressions. (00:34:16)
  • Benchmark Bonded: 100 proof bottled-in-bond Kentucky straight bourbon, aged at least 4 years, distilled at Buffalo Trace Distillery. Dates, figs, honey butter, and butterscotch dominate the nose. On the palate, the mid-palate delivers rich palm fruit sweetness with a buttery character and a pleasant, if brief, warming finish. (00:44:16)
  • Benchmark Full Proof (Foolproof): 125 proof Kentucky straight bourbon, no age statement, distilled at Buffalo Trace Distillery. Entered the barrel at proof and bottled there. Dark amber pour with Medjool dates and butterscotch on the nose. Full-palate sweetness from front to finish with pop-rocks spice on the sides of the tongue, hints of anise, horehound candy, and sarsaparilla on the tail. Drinks lighter than its proof suggests. (00:54:13)

The Benchmark line from Buffalo Trace delivers a clear and accessible proof-by-proof journey through one of Kentucky's most historically grounded bourbon brands. Jim and Mike also tease upcoming appearances at the Kentucky Bourbon Festival, Duck Duck Bourbon in Shelbyville, and Bourbon on the Banks in Frankfort — and they announce a listener giveaway tied to episode 200. Pull a glass, hunt down that Full Proof, and meet them down the Bourbon Road.
