Show Notes

Jim Shannon and Todd Ritter are back for part two of their deep dive into Lost Lantern's Summer Estate Collection, and this time they're turning their full attention to rye. After covering four bourbons and a wheat whiskey in episode 450, the duo settles in for a flight of four single-estate and blended rye whiskeys sourced from craft distilleries spanning Minnesota, Nevada, and California, plus a bonus pour from Brooklyn to close out the evening.

On the Tasting Mat:

  • Far North Spirits Estate Grown Rye (Single Barrel, Lost Lantern Summer Collection): A four-year Minnesota straight rye bottled at 111.5 proof from 226 bottles, retailing around $100. The mash bill is 65% Hazlet rye, 25% heirloom corn, and 10% barley. Far North holds the distinction of being the furthest-north distillery in the contiguous United States. On the nose it is grain-forward with a cool mintiness and melba-toast cereal character. The palate delivers spiced gumdrop sweetness with a licorice-tinged spice and a lively mid-palate tingle. • Frey Ranch Nevada Straight Rye (Single Barrel, Lost Lantern Summer Collection): A six-year rye from a fifth-generation Nevada farm, bottled at 118.5 proof from 230 bottles. The grain is 100% winter rye. The nose opens with mint chocolate chip and a hint of sour stone fruit. The palate is immediately striking — lush, fruity, and chocolatey, with a tropical edge and a finish that layers dark chocolate over ripe fruit. Rich and complex with excellent mouthfeel. (00:12:01)
  • Corbin Cash California Straight Rye (Single Barrel, Lost Lantern Summer Collection): A seven-year rye from Merced, California, bottled at 133 proof from only 108 bottles, retailing at $130. The mash bill is 100% Merced rye. The nose carries candied orange, honey-drizzled dark fruit, and a warm ethanol lift. The palate is chewy and nutty with toasted almond, rye spice, and a long, warming finish. Corbin Cash began as a sweet potato farm before pivoting to distilling. (00:27:54)
  • Farmer's Fields Rye (Blended, Lost Lantern Summer Collection): A blended rye comprising components from all four estate distilleries — an eight-year Corbin Cash, a six-year Frey Ranch, a four-year Far North, and a three-year Whiskey Acres — bottled at 117.4 proof from 538 bottles at $100. On the nose it merges cool mint with background chocolate. The palate is notably smooth and oily with a buttery richness, cooling mint character, and a well-integrated spice. A showcase of Adam Polanski's blending craft. (00:51:12)
  • Kings County Distillery Single Cask Rye (Bonus Pour): Released in 2024 and bottled at 126.4 proof, this Brooklyn, New York rye is made from 80% New York-grown rye and 20% malted barley, likely qualifying as an Empire Rye. Deep and dark in the glass, it opens with a syrupy sweetness reminiscent of dark maple, then transitions into bold rye spice, barrel char, toasted nuts, cooling mint, and a dark chocolate finish. A complex, bold, cigar-worthy whiskey. (00:43:55)

From a fifth-generation Nevada ranch to the northernmost distillery in the lower 48, Lost Lantern's Summer Estate Collection makes a compelling case that craft rye whiskey is thriving far beyond Kentucky's borders. Jim and Todd wrap with news on Dark Arts' new Lexington location, Heaven Hill's latest barrel-proof releases, and a preview of what's coming for the Bourbon on the Banks Festival on October 4th, 2025 in Frankfort, Kentucky.
