Show Notes

Jim Shannon and co-host Brian Hyatt settle in for a well-deserved Monday pour after a packed weekend at Bourbon on the Banks, where the Bourbon Road Lounge drew wall-to-wall roadies and moved through fifty bottles on the tasting bar. Before diving into the glasses, Jim and Brian share highlights from the event — sold-out tickets, a debut of the 100% American tee, and the wildly popular Bourbonista V-neck — and touch on upcoming releases from Buffalo Trace, including the anticipated BTAC drop and a limited Heritage Collection featuring the Golden Wedding Rye. The episode then turns to a category the show has never formally spotlighted: American wheat whiskey.

On the Tasting Mat:

  • Woodford Reserve Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey: A 90.4-proof, four-to-six-year straight wheat whiskey from Brown-Forman's Woodford Reserve Distillery in Versailles, Kentucky. The nose opens with a light cinnamon spark and a hint of ethanol on first approach, giving way to notes of green apple candy and a whisper of cherry. On the palate it arrives soft and relatively thin in body, with fruit-forward candy sweetness — green apple, a touch of cherry hard candy — and a gentle cinnamon spice mid-palate. The finish dries quickly with an oaky, lightly tannic close, landing on the shorter side. Available widely at approximately $39. (00:05:57)
  • Bernheim Original Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey: A 90-proof, seven-year straight wheat whiskey distilled by Heaven Hill in Louisville, Kentucky. The nose is approachable and sweet, with toffee, burnt caramel, and a soft stone-fruit quality — noticeably less ethanol-forward than its counterpart. The palate is more viscous and silky, delivering a creamy creme-brulee-like sweetness up front, backed by cinnamon spice that wasn't telegraphed on the nose. A warm, enveloping body carries through to a medium finish where barrel oak lingers pleasantly and a gentle cocoa note surfaces on the fade. (00:27:49)

Wheat whiskey is a quietly rewarding category — approachable, fruit-forward, and softer in texture than rye-forward bourbons — and today's episode makes a strong case for keeping at least one on the home bar. Jim and Brian also shout out other noteworthy wheat whiskies worth seeking out: Old Elk, Middle West Spirits, 1792 Sweet Wheat, and Traverse City Whiskey Co. Whether you're a longtime roadie or just discovering the world beyond bourbon, there's a wheat whiskey with your name on it.
